چکیده

This paper presents a specific factor model of a small open economy to show the factor price effect and welfare effect of offshoring. Different to ambiguous wage effect conclusions of offshoring under Heckscher-Ohlin framework, the conclusions of this paper is clear-cut. Offshoring will benefit specific factor (skilled labour and land), hurts some non-specific factor (unskilled labour), and enlarge the skilled and unskilled wage gap in home country. This conclusion is independent of factor intensity of offshoring fragment, complete or incomplete specialization at equilibrium and whether FDI is included. However, a welfare loss of home country after offshoring might be possible either with or without FDI because of the redistribution of incomes to different factor owners. If certain amount of unskilled labour is trained to update skills, changes of factor prices are depending on the pre-training equilibrium, international capital mobility and capital intensity of fragments.

Process Models and Distribution of Work in Offshoring Application Software Development

Common process models for the development of application software (AS) are examined as to how well they are suited for offshoring projects. The need for communication and interaction among onsite and offshore project stakeholders is identified as a critical success factor. Process models used by organizations providing offshoring services are discussed, and a generalized offshoring life cycle m...

Trading Tasks: A Simple Theory of Offshoring

The nature of international trade is changing. For centuries, trade mostly entailed an exchange of goods. Now it increasingly involves bits of value being added in many different locations, or what might be called trade in tasks. Revolutionary advances in transportation and communications technology have weakened the link between labor specialization and geographic concentration, making it incr...

Offshoring, Trade in Tasks and Occupational Specificity of Human Capital∗

This paper makes three contributions to our understanding of the impact of offshoring on aggregate productivity and on labour market outcomes. First, I document that workers in tradable service occupations attain more general and more specific human capital. Second, I develop a dynamic general equilibrium model in which workers acquire human capital specific to the task they complete. Third, I ...

Trust and Social Capital: Revisiting an Offshoring Failure Story of a Small German Software Company

While work organization and social capital are known to be important factors for offshoring success, there is little empirical evidence on how these aspects evolve in the course of offshoring projects. In the literature, trust has been discussed as a personal disposition to abstain from control in a given situation, and was found to remain surprisingly stable in some cases. By analyzing the rel...

What Drives Offshoring Decisions? Selection and Escape-Competition Mechanisms

I present a model of offshoring decisions with heterogeneous firms, random adjustment costs, and endogenous markups. The model proposes a tractable probabilistic framework that goes beyond the conventional view of self-selection of more productive firms into offshoring. By characterizing the offshoring decision as a lumpy investment decision subject to heterogeneous adjustment costs, the model ...
